PLAY THERAPY

What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is a type of evidence-based mental health service provided primarily to children where a specially trained therapist utilizes toys, games, and art supplies to help children reach social, emotional and behavioral goals. This therapeutic approach allows children to engage in therapy at their developmental level to produce the most effective results.

Will play therapy help my child?

Play therapy can be effective for a number of issues including anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity, autism spectrum, oppositional defiant and conduct disorders, anger management, crisis and trauma, grief and loss, divorce and family dissolution, academic and social developmental, and physical and learning disabilities.

What is the role of parents and family in play therapy?

The role of parents/guardians will look different depending on the child and the reason for therapy. Parent(s)/guardians will be present for the initial appointment where presenting concerns and goals for therapy are addressed.  While there will be sessions that  focus on the child, parents may be invited to join in sessions with the child.  All parents are encouraged to meet with the therapist  for a parent consultation sessions where progress towards goals are reviewed.

  • Your child has experienced something difficult—like trauma, grief, or a major life change—and may not have the words to express it

  • You’re navigating challenges like ADHD, autism, or emotional regulation and want additional support

  • Your child seems withdrawn, reactive, or is having trouble connecting with others

  • Your family is going through a transition such as divorce, separation, or other shifts in the home

  • You want your child to build emotional awareness, coping skills, and confidence in a way that meets them where they are

  • You’re looking for support that includes both your child and guidance for you as a parent along the way
